What is a PMD file?

A PMD file is a page layout file created with Adobe PageMaker, a program used for creating professional publications such as newsletters and brochures. It contains formatted text, images, and drawn objects. PMD files also support images created in other Adobe programs.

More Information

The Aldus Corporation developed PageMaker in the 1980s to provide professional users with a desktop publishing tool for designing print materials. Adobe Systems eventually acquired Aldus Corporation in 1994 and began releasing PageMaker under the Adobe banner in 1995. Adobe released the final version of PageMaker (7) in 2001, replacing it with InDesign.

When saving a page layout with PageMaker 6 or later, the application creates a PMD file to store the contents. After saving the page layout, you can close the file and re-open it to edit the page layout further.

How to open a PMD file

Although Adobe discontinued the software, you can open PMD files with Adobe PageMaker 6 or later. You can also open PMD files with Adobe InDesign CS6 or earlier. Unfortunately, later versions of InDesign do not open PMD files.

How to convert a PMD file

You can convert a PMD file to another format with Adobe InDesign CS6 or earlier to various file types, including the following formats:

  • .PDF - Portable Document Format
  • .JPG - JPEG Image
  • .PNG - Portable Network Graphic
  • .EPS - Encapsulated PostScript
  • .INDD - Adobe InDesign Document

If you want to open a PMD file with the Creative Cloud (CC) version of InDesign, you can convert it to an INDD file, then open it with InDesign CC.

A PMD file may also be a 3D model used by MikuMikuDance, a 3D animation app. It contains a humanoid mesh users can texture and animate using MikuMikuDance. Most PMD files are created using PMD Editor, a tool developed specifically to create and edit PMD files.

More Information

MikuMikuDance is an animation program that allows users to import, skin, and animate 3D models saved in the PMD or .PMX format. Typically, users use MikuMikuDance to create animations that feature a vocaloid character dancing in a music video. However, users can also use MikuMikuDance to create short films and other types of animations.

To create a PMD model, users must use PMD Editor or another 3D modeling app, such as Blender, with an appropriate plug-in installed. After saving their finished PMD file, users can import the file into MikuMikuDance.

NOTE: PMD Editor has been discontinued and replaced by PMX Editor.

How to open a PMD file

You can open a PMD file with PMD or PMX Editor (Windows), to edit the mesh the file contains, or MikuMikuDance (Windows), to texture and animate the mesh the file contains. You can also open a PMD file with Blender (multiplatform), after installing a PMD plug-in.

How to convert a PMD file

You can use PMX Editor (Windows) to convert PMD files to the newer .PMX format. You can use Blender with a PMG plug-in installed to convert PMD files to other, more common 3D model formats, such as:

  • .DAE - Digital Asset Exchange
  • .USD - Universal Scene Description
  • .PLY - Polygon Model
  • .STL - Stereolithography File
  • .FBX - Autodesk FBX Interchange
  • .GLB, .GLTF - GL Transmission Format
  • .OBJ - Wavefront 3D Object
  • .X3D - Xara3D Project
