What is an SDB file?
An SDB file is a 3D model created with SAP2000, a structural analysis and design program. It contains structural model definitions, material and section properties, static and/or dynamic analysis parameters, and design data.
More Information
Computers & Structures, Inc. (CSI) develops SAP2000. Engineers may use SAP2000 to design various structures, including bridges, industrial complexes, public works facilities, transportation stations, and sports arenas.
SAP2000 saves SDB files in the C:\DATA\ directory by default. When saving an SDB file, SAP2000 automatically creates SBK binary backup files and $2K text backup files in the same directory as the SDB file. SAP2000 also saves temporary tables, viewpoints, and other related files in the same directory as the SDB file. Do not delete these files, as the SDB file may reference them.
NOTE: If your SDB file becomes corrupt, you can retrieve your model by importing the SBK binary or $2K backup file in SAP2000.
Common SDB Filenames
MYMODEL.SDB - Default filename given to SDB files by SAP2000.
How to open an SDB file
You can open SDB files with Computers & Structures SAP2000 in Windows. For example, to open an SDB file, select File → Open.

An SDB file may also be a compatibility fix database used by Microsoft Windows. It contains settings that Windows uses to modify a program for use with a different version of Windows. Windows contains one default SDB file, Sysmain.sdb, which users can use to create customized SDB files for specific applications.
More Information
Over time, the Windows operating system changes such that some programs may not function correctly in newer or older versions of Windows. To alleviate this issue, Windows includes a Compatibility Fix infrastructure, which allows users to to use built-in compatibility settings to modify a program for use in different versions of Windows.
Windows' built-in compatibility settings are stored in the file Sysmain.sdb. Using Sysmain.sdb and the Compatibility Administrator tool, users can create customized compatibility databases, which apply specific compatibility settings to a specific program. These customized compatibility databases are also saved as SDB files.
Typically, custom SDB files are named for the application with which they are meant to be used. For example, an SDB file meant to be used with Microsoft Paint would likely be named Paint.sdb.
Common SDB Filenames
Sysmain.sdb - The default SDB file included with Microsoft Windows.

ServerBoss Database File

An SDB file may also be a database file used by ServerBoss, a server management and automation platform. It contains configuration and setup data that ServerBoss requires to manage servers and services. SDB files are saved in a proprietary database format designed specifically for the application.
More Information
The SDB format supports features such as file locking, which helps maintain data consistency and improve performance when the database is accessed frequently or under heavy load. System administrators and IT professionals who deploy and manage ServerBoss in server environments are most likely to encounter the files.
Common SDB Filenames
ServerBoss.sdb - The name of the SDB file that holds the data in many installations, which the software reads during startup and operation.
How to open an SDB file
You can open SDB files with Integrated Data Processing ServerBoss. However, ServerBoss is no longer developed.

OpenOffice Base Database File

An SDB file may also be a database file created with older versions of Base, a database application included in OpenOffice and earlier versions of StarOffice. It stores structured data and database components, such as tables, queries, forms, and reports. Base uses SDB files to manage and present relational data in a desktop database environment similar to other office database tools.
More Information
SDB files work with both embedded databases and external database systems. Through standard database interfaces such as ODBC and JDBC, Base could connect an SDB file to other database engines, allowing users to view, query, and manage data stored outside the file itself. Typical users included office workers, students, and small organizations that needed a lightweight database solution integrated with an office productivity suite.
NOTE: The SDB format is now obsolete. It has been replaced by the .ODB (OpenDocument Database) format, which is based on open standards and is used by modern versions of OpenOffice and Apache OpenOffice–compatible software.
How to open an SDB file
You can open SDB files with OpenOffice Base. Oracle StarOffice can also open SDB files, but the software is discontinued.

An SDB file may also be a database file used by MonKey Office, a German accounting and order processing application. It stores business data, such as customer records, invoices, orders, and financial records, that the software needs to manage daily operations. MonKey Office reads and writes the data in SDB files as users work with accounts, transactions, and reports inside the application.
More Information
Small businesses, accountants, and office administrators who rely on MonKey Office for bookkeeping and order management are most likely to encounter SDB files. SDB files are saved in the SQLite database format, which is a lightweight, file-based relational database system.
How to open an SDB file
You can open SDB files with ProSaldo MonKey Office. You can also open SDB files with SQLite database tools, but editing the data outside MonKey Office is not recommended, as it may lead to data corruption or application errors.

SparkleDB Database File

An SDB file may also be a database file used by SparkleDB, a semantic NoSQL database management system (DBMS) designed to manage large volumes of data across multiple storage locations. It stores data in a structured internal format that represents a portion of the database and includes a logical ID and a physical ID, which describe how and where the data is stored.
More Information
Enterprise developers, database administrators, and system architects are the primary users of SDB files. They use the files when deploying SparkleDB for large-scale data processing and semantic data applications.
SparkleDB file storage locations are defined in the instance.config.xml file. They are listed within the <datafiles> XML element.
NOTE: Sparkle database files use the following file naming convention by default: [logical ID]-[physical ID].sdb.
How to open an SDB file
SDB files are not meant to be opened. Instead, SparkleDB manages SDB database files. To maintain file integrity, all interaction with SDB files should be performed through SparkleDB's management tools and query interfaces.
SocialDecks Blog File
An SDB file may also be a webpage created by the SocialDecks platform (now discontinued) to create and display blog content on the SocialDecks website. It contains server-side code and markup that the SocialDecks platform parses when a visitor requests the webpage before sending content to them, which they can view in a web browser.
More Information
Website administrators, content creators, and developers who managed blogs within the SocialDecks ecosystem were the most likely to use SDB files. The code in an SDB file controls how blog content is structured, formatted, and delivered, while the final output is standard HTML rendered by the user's web browser.
How to open an SDB file
SDB files are not meant to be edited or interpreted directly by browsers and instead rely on the now-deprecated SocialDecks backend to function correctly. However, you can open SDB files with a text editor.
