What is a SOURCE file?

A SOURCE file is a source code file that contains text written in one or more programming languages. Typically, developers create SOURCE files to store backups of source code files by duplicating the files and renaming the file extensions to .source. Developers may also rename source code files with the .src file extension, creating .SRC files.

The primary reason programmers create SOURCE files is to preserve their code. For example, a C++ developer may worry about their .C files becoming corrupt when they compile the files into machine language. Therefore, the programmer duplicates and renames their C files as SOURCE files to store in a backup folder before compiling them.

How to open a SOURCE file

You can open a SOURCE file with any source code or plain text editor (including Microsoft Notepad in Windows and Apple TextEdit in macOS). Source code editors are the best options for opening SOURCE files because they may be able to identify the type of source code the SRC file contains and provide helpful features, including syntax highlighting.

Examples of source code editors that can open SOURCE files include:

How to convert a SOURCE file

You should not attempt to convert a SOURCE file. Instead, you can rename the .source file extension to match the file's source code. For example, if you identify that the SOURCE file stores only HTML, you can rename the .source extension to .html (.HTML file).
