.DVI File Extension

Output file from a TeX-based program, such as LaTeX; contains typesetting information to be sent to a printer; requires a DVI driver, but is "device-independent," meaning it can be printed on almost any kind of typographic output device; similar to a PostScript (.PS) file.

DVI files are saved in a binary format, meaning they are cannot be read using a text editor.
