.MTS File Extension

High-definition MPEG Transport Stream video format, commonly called "AVCHD;" used by Sony, Panasonic, and other HD camcorders; based on the MPEG-2 transport stream and supports 720p and 1080i HD video formats.

AVCHD stands for "Advanced Video Codec High Definition." The format was jointly established by both Panasonic and Sony in 2006. MTS files can typically be opened and edited using the software included with Sony and Panasonic HD camcorders.

Sample format used by the MadTracker 2 audio tracking program; contains an audio sample of an instrument, voice, or other sound; assigned to an audio track and may played back at different pitches that correspond to notes in the score.

File created by MEGA (Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis), a program used for testing evolutionary hypotheses; saves a phylogenetic tree, which infers ancestral relationships between species based on their genetic makeup.

Phylogenetic trees can require extensive amounts of computation based on genetic information, so MTS files allow users to save the computed output without having to recompute the tree again.
