Overview

PaperPort is a Windows document management program used for scanning, organizing, and searching documents. It includes scanning tools, document organization features, and a PDF generator, which can convert paper documents into searchable digital copies. PaperPort allows users to eliminate paper and store important documents in an electronic format.

User Interface

The PaperPort workspace offers multiple perspectives. The main perspective includes tabbed ribbon-style toolbars that logically group functions together. It also provides navigation features for previewing and browsing documents. The scanning perspective allows users to adjust scan settings and create document images, which are saved as .MAX files. These documents can be opened using PaperPort Viewer, which is included with the software.

Capabilities

PaperPort can create searchable .PDF documents from paper copies. Using Nuance’s proprietary Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, PaperPort can import a scanned image, intelligently recognize its text, and generate a new document with the resulting text. This allows users to import and search digital copies of paper documents, such as letters, school assignments, tax forms, legal documents, receipts, and bills.

The software supports many types of scanners, such as all-in-one printers, mobile scanners, and desktop scanners. PaperPort allows users to save profile settings for each scanner, which helps ensure consistency between scans. Users can also save Scanner Enhancement Technology (SET) options, which helps to straighten, crop, rotate, and enhance documents for optimal quality.

PaperPort integrates with word processing and image-editing programs, allowing users to save scans in multiple file formats. For example, text can be exported to Microsoft Word by dragging a scanned document onto the Word icon located in the PaperPort interface. The program can also export scans as .JPG files to image-editing applications.

Nuance PaperPort is primarily used in home office and small business environments for consolidating and organizing paper documents.
