Overview

Roxio Popcorn software box

Popcorn is a Macintosh software program used to copy DVDs and convert videos. It can duplicate personal CDs and DVDs, and can also copy audio and video data directly to the hard disk. Popcorn can convert video into several different file formats, which may be published on the Web or played back on popular devices. The program also allows users to browse and extract video clips or music from DVDs.

User Interface

The Popcorn user interface is divided into two project categories: Copy and Convert. Users select a category, choose the video source (e.g., DVD Disc, Disk Image, etc.), then add files via drag and drop or the built-in Media Browser. When copying a project, users can burn a disc or save a .TOAST disc image. When converting a media file, users select the target device and output quality, then export the video.

Capabilities

Popcorn can convert video to a wide variety of video formats, including the following:

  • Non-protected DVD-Video discs
  • DVD-Video disc images or VIDEO_TS folders
  • QuickTime file formats, including .DV, .MOV, H.264, and MPEG-4
  • Other file formats, such as MPEG-2, AVCHD, AVCHD Lite, .MKV files, and .FLV files
The software can export video to multimedia devices such as the iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and others. Users can also save videos as Flash files and publish them to YouTube.

Popcorn allows users to browse and extract video and audio clips from DVD movies. Users can locate clips using a disc timeline, or they can search by titles or specific chapters. Extracted clips can be converted to one of several different video formats. When converting a video file, Popcorn displays video clip previews so that users can adjust quality settings before lengthy video conversions. The program also provides controls to pause and resume CPU-intensive video encoding processes, and includes tools for scheduling batch conversions.

User Community

Popcorn is primarily used by personal users for converting and sharing videos. Owners of personal media players benefit from the wide variety of supported video formats. These users can use Popcorn to transfer videos to their devices from formats that would otherwise be incompatible. Digital camcorder owners may also use Popcorn to convert homemade videos to a format suitable for the Web.
