What is a CLJ file?

A CLJ file is a source code file written in Clojure, a dynamic, general-purpose programming language based on Lisp that runs on Java Virtual Machine (JVM), JavaScript, and Common Language Runtime (CLR) platforms. It is a compiled language that may be a standalone program containing all the code or one of many files referenced in a development project. Various programs, including Clojure CLI, Boot, and Visual Studio Code (with the Calva plugin) support CLJ files.

Rich Hickey developed the Clojure programming language in the mid-2000s, with the initial public release in October 2007 and the first stable release in May 2009 (followed by continuous, consistent improvements). He designed it to be a modern update to the Lisp programming language, emphasizing interoperability with the Java platform.

Developers have adopted the language for various applications, often for processing large amounts of data. You may see it used in simulations, building websites, scraping information from webpages, HTML templating, and creative computing applications related to music, gaming, etc.

How to open a CLJ file

You can open CLJ files with various applications, including Clojure CLI, a command line interface for working with Clojure projects, libraries, and tools, and Boot, a Clojure build framework.

Many IDEs and source code editors also support CLJ files. Some examples include Microsoft Visual Studio Code (with the Calva plugin), Sublime Text (with the Clojure Sublimed or Tutkain plugins), and GNU Emacs (with the CIDER plugin).
