.ELM File Extension

Settings file used by Microsoft Office programs, as well as Microsoft FrontPage, which has been discontinued; contains an uncompressed list of concatenated files that make up the theme; may reference graphics files such as .GIF or .JPG files; used for customizing the application user interface.

Office 2010 contains ELM files in the \Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\THEMES14\ directory. Each theme directory that contains an ELM file also includes a .INF file named THEME.INF (where "THEME" is the theme name) and preview files called PREVIEW.GIF and THMBNAIL.PNG.

Office 2007 contains ELM files in subdirectories of the \THEMES12\ directory.

Game file used by Eternal Lands, a free fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG); contains information about modifiable 2D and 3D objects for the map; used in conjunction with a .BMP file, which colors the map and defines locations.

ELM files are often distributed with .GZ compression and use the ".elm.gz" compound file extension.
