What is a GFB file?

A GFB file is a compressed image created by GIFBlast, a utility designed to reduce the size of .GIF images. It contains the image data from a standard GIF, recompressed using the proprietary GIFBlast algorithm. The additional lossless compression decreases the file size while preserving the original image data.

More Information

Computer enthusiasts, shareware users, and early Internet users working with GIF images on DOS-based systems were the primary users of the GIFBlast utility and the GFB format. Tools like GIFBlast became popular in the 1990s when storage space and network bandwidth were limited, making it important to reduce the size of image files before sharing or archiving them.

NOTE: Since modern image formats and compression tools provide efficient file sizes without requiring additional utilities, the GFB format is now considered legacy and is rarely used today.

How to open a GFB file

You can open GFB files with GIFBlast. However, the software is discontinued.

If you do have access to GIFBlast, you can decompress the GFB file and restore the contained GIF image. After extraction, the resulting GIF can be opened with almost any image viewer or web browser.
