What is a JSON-E file?

A JSON-E file is a template used by JSON-e, a data-structure templating system that works with objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and other JSON data types. It contains variables, conditional logic, and other instructions that determine how the resulting data structure is generated. JSON-e templates are typically written as JSON or YAML documents.

More Information

JSON-e uses JSON-E files to generate a data structure from a template and a separate set of input data called a context. Unlike text-based template systems that generate text by replacing placeholders, JSON-e operates on the underlying data structure. This lets developers create different versions of a data structure from the same template by supplying different context data while keeping the output structured.

JSON-e is available as a library for several programming languages, including JavaScript, Python, Go, and Rust, as well as through a .NET implementation. Software such as Taskcluster uses JSON-e to generate task definitions from JSON-shaped input data, while other applications can use it to generate customized configuration and other structured data.

NOTE: Taskcluster is a division of Mozilla.

How to open a JSON-E file

You can open JSON-E files with any text editor or source-code editor, such as Microsoft Visual Studio Code, since the template is stored as structured text. However, simply opening the file displays the template rather than the data it produces.
