A MEGA file may also be a partially downloaded file created by MEGAsync, a cloud file storage and synchronization system. It contains a portion of a file that your computer has not yet finished downloading through MEGAsync. MEGA files are automatically replaced with their completely-downloaded equivalents after the related MEGAsync download finishes.

More Information

When a MEGA user manually downloads a file from the MEGA cloud using MEGAsync, they may see a MEGA file appear in their Downloads folder. This file represents the in-process download. When the download finishes, the MEGA file is replaced by the downloaded file.

Typically, you'll see a MEGA file only during lengthy downloads or when you've manually paused a download. If you want to resume a paused MEGAsync download, click the MEGA icon on your taskbar and then click the Pause icon to resume your download.

How to open a MEGA file

MEGA files are not meant to be opened. If you need to resume a MEGAsync download, so your MEGA file becomes a fully-downloaded file, refer to the instructions above. If you cannot resume your download, you should attempt to re-download the file your MEGA file represents.
