What is a V64 file?

A V64 file is a video game ROM image created by Doctor V64, a Nintendo 64 game data backup device created by Bung Enterprises. It contains an exact copy of the data stored on an N64 game cartridge, including game data and save files. V64 files can be used to play N64 games on a PC, using an N64 emulator.

More Information

Doctor V64 is an unofficial tool that players could purchase and connect to their N64 to back up their game data. The device saved users' game data files as V64 files. Each V64 file contained an exact copy of the N64 game it was created from, as well as a copy of a player's save data. Players could export V64 files from and load V64 files into Doctor V64.

The game data V64 files contain is byteswapped, meaning it is recorded in neither the big-endian or little-endian format. Non-byteswapped N64 ROMs are typically saved using the .Z64 extension.
