What is a XIF file?

XIF (eXtended Image Format) file originally created for the ScanSoft Pagis scanning software; designed as an extension to the .TIFF format for storing text documents as images; separates the image into four layers:

  1. Text layer for optical character recognition (OCR)
  2. Layer for text colors
  3. Color image segments layer
  4. Background tint layer
NOTE: ScanSoft is now Nuance Communications. The XIF file format is still supported by some Nuance applications.
