Overview

CyberLink PowerDirector software box

PowerDirector is a video editing and enhancement program developed by CyberLink. It includes basic editing features and tools for improving video quality, which make it ideal for editing video on a home computer. PowerDirector includes DVD and Blu-ray disc authoring tools and supports many video file formats, including MPEG-4 and H.264. It also includes CyberLink’s proprietary TrueTheater and TrueVelocity technologies, which fix shooting errors, improve video and sound quality, and optimize video rendering for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA processors.

User Interface

PowerDirector provides a flexible workspace for editing videos. Using up to 100 video/audio tracks, users can crop, reverse, slow down, speed up, and rotate videos as well as apply special effects. Each track maintains its own properties, such as start time, end time, effects, and subtitles.

Capabilities

PowerDirector allows users to import and export video data using a variety of different formats. Users can publish videos directly to YouTube, Facebook, or other online video sites. Completed movies can be burned to a video CD, DVD, Blu-ray, or AVCHD disc. Users can also export video to common video formats such as .AVI and .WMV. Movie projects can be saved as a PowerDirector project (.PDS) file for later editing.

The software's TrueVelocity rendering engine leverages both software and hardware technologies for fast video processing. TrueVelocity supports 64-bit processors and operating systems, as well as memory utilization beyond the 4GB RAM limit of 32-bit architectures. It also utilizes graphics processor units (GPUs) and multithreaded CPUs for increased rendering efficiency.

PowerDirector's TrueTheater technologies enhance videos by fixing common shooting errors, such as extreme backlighting or poor white balance. They may also sharpen videos, adjust lighting, reduce jitter, and add surround sound audio. TrueTheater technologies can also upscale standard definition (SD) video to HD-like quality.

User Community

The PowerDirector community is primarily comprised of home video creators. PowerDirector’s simple interface help users create high quality home videos in a short period of time. Also, since PowerDirector supports many consumer digital camera RAW and AVCHD camcorder file formats, including those from Sony, Panasonic, and Canon, it a good choice for editing home recordings. The online DirectorZone community provides program tutorials and allows home users to share videos and learn video editing techniques from other users.
