What is an RW file?

An RW file is a website project created by RapidWeaver 7, a macOS website development application developed by Realmac Software. It stores editable data for a website project, allowing users to continue designing, organizing, and publishing it over time. RW files typically contain page content, site structure, theme settings, publishing information, resources, and references to images and other files used by the website.

More Information

Realmac Software introduced RW files when it released RapidWeaver 7, replacing .RW6 files. Version 7 uses RW files as its primary project format for creating and managing websites.

Rather than storing the exported website itself, RW files preserve the project's editable information, allowing users to modify the site later. Web designers, freelancers, hobbyists, and developers commonly use RW files to maintain website layouts, update content, configure publishing settings, and organize project resources throughout the development process.

How to open an RW file

You can open RW files with RapidWeaver Classic, which saves a converted copy as an .RWC file for continued editing after opening it. To open an RW file with RapidWeaver Classic, select File → Open. After opening the project, you can modify pages, manage themes and resources, preview the website, and publish the finished site.

You can also open RW files with Realmac RapidWeaver 7 and 8. However, both versions of the software are no longer developed.
